Human Trafficking & Cyber Fraud

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Currently on the Central Coast there isn’t a single cohesive resource for victims of human trafficking and cyber fraud to access. There also is not a place for people to educate themselves to prevent these crimes from happening. Instead, people go to several different resources to find the information they are looking for. In addition, these resources are not accessible to non English speakers and those who are not familiar with technology. A huge percentage of these victims are non English speakers and elderly people who are not aware how to use technology; although; these problems are relevant in every demographic.

ABSTRACT

My teammates and I worked in conjunction with the District Attorney offices in San Luis Obispo County and Santa Barbara County, along with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. We all want to help bring awareness to victims of human trafficking and cyber fraud as well as prevent more crimes from happening.

Our project is to develop an interface with existing content to educate the Central Coast while also being accessible to non native english speakers and to people who are illiterate. Aside from a website, we also created a social media campaign.

NEXT STEPS

Using the research and information we acquired from primary and secondary sources we will use this to make the website accessible to the public. This website will provide ample information regarding human trafficking and cyber fraud. It will demonstrate the types of trafficking across the central coast, signs of trafficking and cyber fraud, and resources available for those who need help.

We will then meet with District Attorney in order to test the website prototypes and make sure they meet their specifications. The website will include all the accessibility needed to help users who are illiterate, non native English speakers, and/or disabled. We will work on accomplishing all of the needs from the district attorney’s critiques for the website and marketing materials.

After the website is finalized edits we will then move on to the mobile app. This mobile app will be available on Apple iOS and Android. We plan to develop a class devoted to this cause consisting of GrC, IT students, psychology, and computer science students. We will transfer this project over to the other students in the following quarters. In addition, we hope to create an event, possibly with Safer, to educate Cal Poly Students about these topics.

The future steps are to make it function as an actual website that is mobile friendly, in conjunction with a mobile app, as well as implement the social media campaigns. For next quarter, continuing members will test out the website, application, and implement the social media campaigns in real life. We hope that other students will carry on this project in the next years.
